New learning game transforms GDPR training

Delegates attending GDPR: Summit London on 25 June will discover how a digital game can transform GDPR training from a boring chore into an engaging learning experience that employees want to complete.

Our award-winning team will be demonstrating GDPR Sorted, an innovative learning game that helps people learn and apply the basic principles of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

The forthcoming GDPR Summit is exactly a month after the May 25 introduction of GDPR, the biggest shake-up in data protection laws for decades.

Sponge will be in the Exhibitor Hall, showcasing GDPR Sorted and explaining how the game has been designed specifically to embed core data protection principles to reduce the risk of data breach by employees.

The game tackles two major challenges presented by GDPR training: how to keep the learning up-to-date as the regulations undergo change, and, crucially, how to deliver it in an engaging way.

Sponge’s GDPR Solutions Specialist, James Foster, explained: “When you think of GDPR, it’s easy to instantly think that it’s a dry topic and the learning will therefore be tackled in a dry way. But we disagree.

“What we’ve found from user-testing is that although employees are meant to do the game during work hours, they enjoy the challenge so much they keep coming back to try and beat their highest score. So, the game isn’t just getting people through the training, it’s engaging them so that they’re taking it home with them and doing it again in their own time.”

Through the game, the player learns what is protected under GDPR and who they can and can’t share that data with. They also learn the nuances around the key knowledge items, such as: Where does the consent come from? Has it been transparent? Is it a legitimate use?

At the end of the game, the player will have shown they are able to identify what a breach is and that they know what action to take.

“Yes, it’s a game, but it’s a learning game,” said James. “The employee is learning by doing, by tackling real-world scenarios. In the game, they are faced with common situations that they’ll find in their jobs and they’ll be asked to sort and process that data in a way that is GDPR-compliant.”

"The game isn’t just getting people through the training, it’s engaging them so that they’re taking it home with them and doing it again in their own time.” James Foster GDPR Solutions Specialist Sponge

One of the key messages at GDPR Summit London is that GDPR is a journey, not a destination, and that compliance will require continuous evaluation. James said: “This is another reason why a digital learning game should be considered as part of a continuous training solution because content can be updated as and when required.”

GDPR Summit London takes place at 155 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 3YD, from 09:00 to 17:10 on 25 June. The event includes three keynote theatres, over 40 keynote presentations, more than 20 data protection experts, live Q&As and case studies.

The Sponge team will be at stand 35 giving demonstrations of the GDPR game and answering questions about how best to implement a successful GDPR training strategy.
